Crime and Justice Institute Help Desk
CJI operates as a division of Community Resources for Justice, and provides nonpartisan policy analysis, consulting, and research services to improve public safety throughout the country. The CJI Help Desk can help answer questions about evidence-based practices and returning parolees, provide a critical review of strategic plans, and provide guidance for your Community Corrections Partnership.
Council of State Governments Justice Center
The CSG Justice Center serves policymakers at all levels to promote effective data-driven practices and practical solutions to public safety and cross-systems problems. The Justice Center has conducted projects on responses to justice-involved people with mental illnesses, crime victims, prisoner reentry and justice reinvestment.
National Council on Crime and Delinquency
The National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD) promotes just and equitable social systems for individuals, families, and communities through research, public policy, and practice. NCCD offers evidence-based assessment systems in adult corrections as well as technical assistance and training. NCCD’s website offers a comprehensive research library as well as information on its TA, training, and assessments.
National Institute of Corrections (NIC)
The NIC is an agency within the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons. It provides training, technical assistance, information, and policy/program development assistance to federal, state, and local corrections agencies, and also awards funds to support its program initiatives.
The National Institute of Justice is the research, development and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice – it is primarily a funding body for evaluations and criminal justice research. The NIJ website is a comprehensive research of evaluations, original research and tools in many areas of criminal justice, including corrections.
The NIC Women Offenders Project provides technical assistance to local jurisdictions wishing to examine and improve their responses to women offenders. http://nicic.gov/WomenOffenders. It has worked together with the University of Cincinnati have prepared risk assessment tools for women offenders for all stages of their justice involvement.
Pew Center on the States: Corrections and Public Safety
The Pew Center on the States ‘Public Safety Performance Project’ provides corrections data analysis support and advice to state and local governments. Its aim is to “help states advance fiscally sound, data-driven policies and practices in sentencing and corrections that protect public safety, hold offenders accountable and control corrections costs.” The Project has worked particularly on probation and parole systems, and is working with 15 States (not including California) to achieve better returns on their public safety investments.
PJI provides information and research on pre-trial program development. Its website provides resources on bail decision-making, pretrial diversionary programs, defendant supervision and program assessment. PJI also provides services to local and state agencies, including: the design and development of pre-trial risk assessments, the design and implementation of pretrial diversionary programs, conducting assessments of pre-trial programs, as well as training and technical assistance.
Urban Institute – Justice Policy Center
The Justice Policy Center of the Urban Institute’ work includes Corrections, Reentry and Community Supervision. Its programs and projects include technical assistance, development of tools for practitioners, and research and evaluation designed to improve justice and public safety policies and practices at the national, state, and local level.
The Vera Institute provides policy research and technical assistance on a range of criminal justice issues, in partnership with state and local officials. At the request of government actors, Vera experts conduct in depth assessments of aspects of the criminal justice system and work with local stakeholders to propose reforms and monitoring programs. The Vera website provides resources on and evaluations of family-focused corrections, re-entry programs, drug treatment and others.
